Religion, at its essence, is meant to guide human life. It cannot merely be a collection of myths or folklore, nor can it exist as an abstract philosophy disconnected from daily living. Religion must not be reduced to rituals and traditions alone. It becomes meaningful only when it addresses every facet of existence—from the first breath to the final moments, and even beyond.
Now, consider this: someone is introducing a new tool or device along with its manual. People naturally ask questions: What is this for? How does it work? How should it be used? If the expert cannot answer these questions, or if the manual is incomplete, the tool loses its value.
Apply this logic to religion. Look at it objectively and ask: which religion provides a comprehensive manual for human life? One that addresses personal, familial, social, marital, economic, educational, cultural, political, and spiritual dimensions in clear and actionable terms?
RELIGION AS A RESPONSE TO LIFE’S QUESTIONS
What are the evils plaguing our society? Alcoholism, substance abuse, usury, adultery, fraud, violence, cruelty, theft, deceit, mockery, slander, and exploitation- the list is a growing one but retains some original form. Take these issues one by one and examine what the major religions have to say about them. Do they offer solutions? Do they address these problems with clarity and authority?
Now shift focus to the virtues that uplift humanity—honesty, compassion, empathy, generosity, respect, responsibility, forgiveness, gratitude, humility, discipline, hard work, simplicity, trustworthiness, cooperation, love, and kindness. Investigate how different religions nurture these qualities. What do their teachings say? How do they guide individuals and communities in embodying these virtues?
THE HUMAN TOUCH
Religion should never feel distant or disconnected. It must not be an untethered collection of lofty ideals floating in abstraction, nor a rigid set of empty proclamations. True religion must carry the pulse of humanity, the vibrance of people, the scent of the earth, and the rhythm of water. It must touch every pore of daily life.
Religion should always serve as a guide, a solution, and the ultimate answer to the challenges of existence. It should be practical, relevant, and transformative, offering wisdom that resonates with the realities of human life.
STUDY WITHOUT BIAS
Approach Islam and other religions without preconceived notions. Study them deeply, thoroughly, and objectively. Explore how they respond to the questions of life, the dilemmas of morality, and the pursuit of meaning. Examine how they address both the flaws and the virtues of humanity.
You may find yourself astonished at the depth and relevance of these teachings. Truth, when approached sincerely, reveals itself with clarity. And in that revelation, you may find the answers you have been seeking all along.
