Salma, daughter of Qays from the noble tribe of Najjār, was not content with merely believing. Alongside her dearest companions, she chose to stand before the Prophet ﷺ and pledge herself to a life of righteousness.
The covenant was clear and luminous: to worship none but Allah, to never misappropriate others’ wealth, and then came a striking admonition from the Messenger ﷺ:
“Do not behave deceitfully toward your husbands.”
Everyone pledged, and then dispersed to their homes. But something lingered in Salma’s heart. What exactly does it mean—not to deal deceitfully with one’s husband? She confided her doubt to a close friend, who promptly brought the matter to the Prophet ﷺ. He explained:
“It means not spending from your husband’s earnings in a way he would disapprove of.”
That clarity calmed her heart. Salma was not only devoted—she was meticulous in her pursuit of integrity. She was also tireless in service. Known for her compassion, Salma had long been active in charitable and relief efforts.
During a time of conflict, when the Muslim community was forced to confront the repeated betrayals and hostilities of Banū Qurayẓah, several men from that tribe were taken captive. Among them was Rifāʿah—a man Salma knew personally.
Moved by mercy, she approached the Prophet ﷺ on his behalf. He was brought before the Prophet ﷺ, who offered him two paths:
“If you pray, it will be better for you.
But if you remain firm upon your previous faith, you will suffer loss.”
Because of Salma’s intercession, Rifāʿah chose Islam, stepping into its radiant path. Her care extended not only to strangers but to the most beloved of the Prophet’s household.
One day, the Prophet ﷺ visited her home, accompanied by ʿAlī (RA), who was unwell at the time. Salma herself narrates:
“We had only a few old dates in the house. The Prophet ﷺ ate from them. ʿAlī began to eat too, though he was still sick. The Prophet ﷺ gently told him, ‘ʿAlī, you should refrain—for your recovery.’ Then I prepared some barley and beetroot for them. The Prophet ﷺ told ʿAlī to eat from it, saying it was more suitable for his condition.”
Such was her hospitality—nourishment shaped by love and prophetic care. Her loyalty didn’t waver in times of peace or trial.
When the Treaty of Ḥudaybiyyah was made—an agreement destined to change the future of Islam—Salma was present. The pledge took place under a tree, and the Prophet ﷺ declared:
“No one who pledged allegiance under this tree will enter Hell.”
She was among them. Among the covenant-makers of righteousness. Among the women who did not simply support the Prophet ﷺ but stood with him—clarifying doubts, intervening with mercy, nourishing his family, and offering allegiance that echoed through eternity.
She was Salma bint Qays. A quiet force of goodness. A woman whose every step became a contract with truth.
