eave me here; go to your friend." These were the Prophet’s ﷺ words as Abu Bakr and Abu Ubaydah, may Allah be pleased with them both, rushed toward him to help. The Prophet ﷺ directed them toward another sight that awaited their attention. They turned and saw a pit. And in that pit, a companion lay—motionless, drenched in blood. His body bore the marks of over seventy strikes, arrows, slashes, and stab wounds.
Who was this valiant soul?
Abu Muhammad Talhah ‘Ubaidullah ibn ‘Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him.
He was the man whom the Prophet ﷺ had lovingly named Talhah al-Khayr and Talhah al-Jood—Talhah, the Beneficent, the Generous. The man who had shielded the Prophet ﷺ with his own body during the Battle of Uhud, defending him when many others retreated.
His face battered, his teeth broken, blood pouring from his lips, Talhah lifted the Prophet ﷺ onto his back, deflecting every arrow, enduring every onslaught.
The Prophet ﷺ assured Talhah of his place in Paradise. "The Day of Uhud," Abu Bakr would later reminisce, "is the Day of Talhah."
But there was more to Talhah’s story—a story he himself recounted:
"I was in the market of Busra[1] when I heard a Christian priest calling out, 'People of the market! Is there anyone among you from the sanctuary (Haram)?'
I answered, 'Yes, I am.'
The priest looked at me and asked, 'Has Ahmad the Prophet emerged yet?'
I replied, 'Who is Ahmad?'
The priest explained, 'He is the son of Abdul Muttalib, the Final Prophet, and this is his appointed month. Soon, he will flee to a land filled with black stones and date palms (Madinah), a land of salt and water. Quickly, take his hand and pledge allegiance to him.'
The priest’s words stirred something in me. I began asking around about the news in Makkah, and the people said, 'Yes, Al-Amin, Muhammad ibn Abdullah, claims to be a prophet, and Abu Bakr has believed in him.'
Abu Bakr? I knew him well—a man of pure character, an honest merchant. I had always respected him and often sat in his company.
Without delay, I sought out Abu Bakr and asked, 'Is it true that Muhammad claims prophethood and that you follow him?'
Abu Bakr affirmed it with a nod. I told him about the priest’s words in Busra. Abu Bakr was astonished and said, 'Come with me; share your story with the Prophet ﷺ and hear his response yourself.'
We went together to the Prophet ﷺ. He recited verses from the Qur’an, teaching me the principles of Islam and speaking of both worldly and eternal success. Then, I shared with him the priest’s words from Busra. The Prophet’s ﷺ face lit up with joy.
And so, I embraced Islam before him. I was among the first four to accept Islam at Abu Bakr’s hands."
Talhah’s account is just one of many—a story heard by the people of the scriptures who recognized the signs of the Prophet ﷺ and embraced Islam.
But there are many more tales in the rich history of the Companions.
For instance, consider Mughira ibn Shu’ba. The distinguished Companion who later served as governor of Kufa under Umar’s rule. He, too, has a story:
“I was living in Alexandria[2], and I spoke with every priest I could find, asking them about the signs of the awaited Prophet. Among them, the most knowledgeable was Abu Yahnas.
I asked Abu Yahnas, “Is there still a prophet yet to come?”
The priest responded, “Yes, and he is the Final Prophet, with no other messenger to come between him and Jesus, son of Mary. He is the one whom Jesus instructed us to follow. An Arab prophet, unlettered, and his name will be Ahmad. He is neither too tall nor too short, with a complexion neither pale nor dark. He will wield a sword in battle, fearlessly leading his followers into war, supported by devoted companions who will love him more than their own fathers and sons. He will come from the region of Quraish, and he will migrate from one sanctuary to another—moving to a land with date palms.”
The priest went on, “He will perform ritual washing and will be distinguished by unique practices. Unlike previous prophets, he will be sent to all of humanity. He will pray wherever he finds himself, without need for special houses of worship, and if he cannot find water, he will purify himself with earth.”
The description struck me deeply. How could such precise details be known without Divine knowledge? I soon made my way to meet the Prophet ﷺ, and after hearing his message, I embraced Islam and shared all that the priest had told me.”
