The followers of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ will appear radiant on the Day of Judgment — their faces, hands, and feet shining brilliantly. This radiance will be the result of their practice of Wudu (ritual purification).
We have already mentioned that minor impurities require bodily purification. Now, let us understand what Wudu is and how it is performed.
Essential Components (Fard) of Bodily Purification
Fard refers to the compulsory components necessary for the validity of any act of worship.
There are six obligatory acts (Fard) in Wudu:
1. Niyyah (Intention)
Niyyah means to intend or hold firmly in the heart. It must be present internally; mere verbal utterance is insufficient.
The intention that that “I am fulfilling the obligation of Wudu” or “I am making myself permissible for prayer” should be present when beginning to wash the face.
2. Washing the Face
From the hairline on the forehead to the bottom of the chin (lengthwise) and from one earlobe to the other (widthwise) defines the face.
All skin and hair in this area must be washed.
If the beard is so thick that the skin underneath is not visible when facing someone, the inner part need not be washed.
3. Washing Both Hands Including the Elbows
Wash both hands entirely from the fingertips up to and including the elbows. Ensure that no dirt remains under the nails.
4. Wiping a Portion of the Head
Wipe any part of the hair or skin at the boundary of the head.
5. Washing Both Feet Including the Ankles
Wash from the tips of the toes up to and including the ankles.
Ensure that spaces between the toes and the soles of the feet are thoroughly washed.
6. Performing the Acts in Order
The above components must be performed in sequence.
However, if one submerges completely in water with the intention of Wudu, maintaining sequence is not necessary.
Conditions (Shurut) of Wudu
For Wudu to be valid, certain conditions must be met:
1. Use of Pure Water
Water from wells, ponds, rivers, etc., is acceptable. Though tea, milk, or rice water is drinkable, they are unsuitable for bodily purification. If water is less than approximately 200 liters, impurity falling into it renders it unusable. If impurity falls into water of 200 liters or more, it becomes unsuitable only if the taste, smell, or color changes.
2. Flowing of Water Over the Limbs
Simply wetting or spraying is not sufficient; water must flow over the limbs.
3. Absence of Contaminating Substances
No residues like ink or soap should remain that coat the skin.
4. No Barriers Preventing Water from Reaching the Skin
Substances such as tar, paint, or thick mud must not be present. If doubt arises during Wudu about whether a part was washed, that part and the following parts must be rewashed. Doubts arising after Wudu completion are disregarded.
Recommended Acts (Sunnah) of Wudu
These are acts that, though not obligatory, bring rewards when performed:
1. Saying “Bismillah”
Saying “Bismillah” (In the Name of Allah) before any good act is recommended. If forgotten initially but remembered later, say:
“Bismillah awwalahu wa akhirahu.”
2. Washing the Hands Before Starting Wudu
Wash both hands up to the wrists.
3. Cleaning the Mouth (Brushing)
Brushing the teeth, including the gums and tongue, is highly encouraged:
- Before Wudu
- Before prayer
- Before Qur’an recitation
- After waking up
- Before sleeping
- Before entering the mosque
If bad odor or impurity is present, brushing becomes obligatory. It is recommended to use a clean, coarse tool like the Arak twig.
4. Rinsing the Mouth and Nose
Gargling and rinsing the nose during Wudu is Sunnah. It is particularly encouraged for non-fasting individuals.
5. Wiping the Entire Head
Although wiping a part of the head is obligatory, wiping the entire head is Sunnah.
6. Wiping Both Ears
Wipe both the inner and outer parts of the ears:
- Right ear with the right hand
- Left ear with the left hand
7. Reciting the Testimony After Washing Each Limb
Recite:
“Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lahu wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluhu.”
(“I testify that there is no god but Allah, alone without partner, and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.”)
Additional Sunnahs during Wudu
Rubbing the limbs during washing.
- Running fingers through a thick beard.
- Spreading fingers and toes while washing.
- Washing and wiping limbs three times each.
- Giving preference to the right side.
- Beginning to wash the face from the top of the forehead.
- Facing the Qibla during Wudu.
- Avoiding unnecessary talk.
- Not wasting or drinking leftover Wudu water.
Supplication After Completing Wudu
After completing Wudu, recite:
Meaning:
“I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, alone without any partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.
O Allah, make me among those who constantly repent, among those who purify themselves, and among Your righteous servants.
Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You. I bear witness that there is no deity except You. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance.”

Ghusl (Full-body Ritual Bath)
As previously mentioned, bathing is obligatory to remove major impurity. Let us explore the obligatory components, conditions, and recommended acts of Ghusl.
Conditions for Ghusl
All conditions (Shurut) applicable to Wudu also apply to Ghusl.
Obligatory Components of Ghusl
There are two obligatory acts in Ghusl:
1. Niyyah (Intention)
At the beginning of washing any part of the body, one must intend the removal of major impurity.
2. Ensuring Water Reaches the Entire Body
Water must reach every part of the visible body. No hair pore should remain dry.
Special care must be taken to wash:
- Inside thick beards
- Folds and hidden areas of the body
Sunnahs of Ghusl
Many Sunnah acts mentioned for Wudu are also Sunnah during Ghusl.
Bathing is Sunnah for various occasions, such as:
- Before Jumu’ah (Friday prayer)
