Friday is a day specially granted by Allah to the community of the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ introduced Friday as the most virtuous of all days on which the sun rises.
It is a festival day for the believers and a manifest symbol of Muslim unity, where all Muslim men of a locality gather for a spiritual congregation. This weekly gathering fosters both mental closeness and spiritual bonding among the faithful.
Jumuʿah is the special noon prayer held on Fridays. It is obligatory for every adult, sane, free, resident Muslim male without a valid excuse to attend the Jumuʿah prayer.
It is not obligatory for:
- Women,
- Children,
- Slaves,
- The sick and the mentally ill.
It is prohibited for women to go out specifically for Jumuʿah. Those who embark on a journey before dawn on Friday are not required to attend Jumuʿah, but it is still Sunnah for them to do so.
If one begins a journey after dawn on Friday, it is not permissible to skip Jumuʿah.
Also, if it is known that Jumuʿah will be missed during the journey, then it is impermissible to begin the journey on Friday morning.
Jumuʿah must be performed during the time of Dhuhr (midday prayer). Unlike the usual four Rakʿahs of Dhuhr, Jumuʿah is two Rakʿahs, performed after two sermons (Khutbahs). While most daytime prayers are recited quietly, the recitation in Jumuʿah must be loud. This prayer is valid only if performed in congregation.
There are two Adhans (calls to prayer) for Jumuʿah:
- The first when the time of Dhuhr begins.
- The second after the Imam ascends the minbar (pulpit) for the Khutbah (sermon).
Before the Khutbah starts, an announcer should address the people (known as Maʿashir call) to draw their attention.
After the Adhan for Jumuʿah:
- Engaging in business or any worldly activity is prohibited.
- Once the Imam ascends the minbar, reciting loudly or praying in a way that disturbs others is prohibited.
- Listening to the Khutbah attentively is required.
- It is forbidden to step over people’s backs while moving forward in the gathering.
Conditions of Jumu’a
In addition to general prayer conditions, Jumuʿah has six specific conditions:
1. It must be held in a settled locality.
Jumuʿah is valid only in a place that is considered part of a town or settlement.
2. At least 40 permanent male residents of that town must be present.
- These 40 must listen to the Khutbah.
- If a town does not have 40 eligible men, residents must attend Jumuʿah in the nearest town.
- If that is not possible, they should perform Dhuhr instead.
3. It must be held during the time of Dhuhr.
The prayer must fall strictly within the time frame of Dhuhr.
4. The prayer must be performed after two sermons (Khutbahs).
The Special Sermon (Khutbah):
- One of the unique Friday acts of worship is the Khutbah.
- It must begin with praise of Allah and must consist of two Khutbahs.
Conditions for a valid Khutbah:
- At least 40 eligible attendees must be able to hear it.
- The preacher must be a Muslim, adult, sane male.
- He must be free from physical impurity and filth.
- He must cover his awrah (private parts).
- The Khutbah must be delivered in Arabic.
- The two Khutbahs must be consecutive, with a brief sitting in between.
Five essential components of the Khutbah:
- Praise of Allah.
- Sending Salawat (blessings) upon the Prophet ﷺ.
- Admonition to fear Allah (taqwa) and follow His commands.
- Recitation of at least one meaningful verse from the Qur’an in one of the Khutbahs.
- A supplication for the believers in the second Khutbah.
Unlike regular speeches, these requirements make the Khutbah a specific act of worship.
Some modernists, under the guise of making Khutbahs more accessible, deliver them in non-Arabic languages, undermining the unity of the Islamic tradition. Such Khutbahs are invalid.
5. The person must join the Imam in at least one complete Rakʿah.
We’ve already discussed what qualifies as joining a Jamaʿah.
- If one joins the Imam and completes at least one full Rakʿah, Jumuʿah is valid for him.
- Even if the Imam later becomes invalid (e.g., loses Wudu), the Rakʿah is counted.
If no Rakʿah was joined before the Imam’s Salam, then one must perform four Rakʿahs of Dhuhr instead.
Example:
- If someone joins after the Rukuʿ of the second Rakʿah, he has missed Jumuʿah and must pray Dhuhr.
- If he joins before the Rukuʿ of the second Rakʿah, one Rakʿah is considered valid, and he only needs to complete one more after the Imam’s Salam.
6. No other valid Jumuʿah should be conducted in the same locality before it.
If the entire town cannot gather in one location:
- It is permissible to conduct more than one Jumuʿah.
However:
- Without such necessity, multiple Jumuʿahs are invalid if the Takbiratul Ihram of both Imams coincide.
- If they do not coincide, the first Jumuʿah is valid, and the second is invalid.
Sunnah Practices for Those Intending Jumuʿah:
- Trim nails, moustache, armpit hair, and pubic hair.
- Take ghusl (ritual bath) after dawn.
- Wear the best clothing.
- Apply perfume (for non-fasters).
- Go early to the mosque.
- Walk to the mosque calmly, avoid using a vehicle without reason.
Other recommended practices on Friday:
- Recite Surah Al-Kahf from the Qur’an.
- Increase Salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ.
- Engage in charity and good deeds.
