It was a calm day in Madina, and Sa’id ibn Sa’na, a respected Jewish priest, entered quietly into the gathering of the Prophet ﷺ. He came with a purpose, though he sat unassumingly, blending in with those around him, his expression thoughtful and eyes keenly observant. Few knew him here, and that suited him well.
As they sat in silence, a man approached on horseback, his face etched with worry. Greeting respectfully, he addressed the Prophet ﷺ, "O Messenger, there is a region called Busra... its people are suffering greatly. I offered them help, but they need much more."
The Prophet ﷺs face softened; his heart stirred by the plight of the poor. Charity was his delight, yet he had nothing left to give. He turned to Ali, who could only nod in regret. "We have nothing, O Messenger," Ali replied quietly.
The priest, observing their difficulty, spoke up. "Muhammad, I can lend you eighty miskals of gold, in exchange for a portion of dates from a specific orchard, to be repaid at a set time."
The Prophet ﷺ nodded, accepting the offer. They set the terms—the quantity, the orchard, the deadline. Sa’id promptly delivered the gold.
Yet, just two days before the debt was due, the priest approached the Prophet ﷺ again. He found him amidst a gathering, surrounded by his companions, attending to the funeral rites of a fellow believer. Ignoring the solemnity of the moment, Sa’id pushed through the crowd and seized the Prophet’s ﷺ cloak and mantle in a swift, rough pull.
"Why haven't you repaid me?" he demanded, his tone harsh, his gaze piercing. "I expected more from the clan of Banu al-Muttalib." His voice dripped with accusation as he mocked, "Is this how you treat those who help you?"
Umar (RA), who had been watching the scene unfold, could no longer contain his anger. He leapt to his feet, his voice a thunderclap. "How dare you speak like this? Do you know who you're speaking to?" His hand went to the hilt of his sword, his rage barely contained. "If it weren’t for my fear of the Prophet’s ﷺ disapproval, your head would not remain on your shoulders."
The Prophet ﷺ raised his hand gently, his voice calm and even. "Umar, both he and I needed something different from you. Ask him to make his request with respect, and me to repay him with grace." Turning to Umar, the Prophet ﷺ said, "Ensure he receives his due, and for the harshness he faced, give him twenty extra sa’ of dates as well."
Umar collected the dates and brought them to Sa’id. “Here is what you are owed from the Prophet ﷺ, plus an additional twenty sa’ for my rough words.”
Sa’id looked at the dates, then back at Umar, a small smile playing on his lips. "Do you know who I am, Umar?"
"No, I do not," Umar replied.
"I am Sa’id ibn Sa’na," Sa’id said, his gaze steady.
Umar’s eyes narrowed in recognition. "Ah, the well-known Jewish priest."
“Yes, indeed,” Sa’id replied, nodding. “Do you know why I acted as I did with the Prophet?”
Umar frowned, curiosity overtaking his frustration. "What drove you to treat him so?”
Sa’id exhaled slowly, his voice softening. “I had already recognized every sign of prophethood in him, as foretold in our scriptures. But there were two things I needed to witness with my own eyes. First, that his patience would overcome his anger. And second, that if anyone treated him with ignorance, it would only increase his forbearance.”
He paused, his gaze unwavering. “Today, I have seen both qualities. I testify that Muhammad is indeed the Messenger of Allah, and I embrace Islam.”
And then, with a final, humble gesture, he continued, “Furthermore, I am a wealthy man. Half of my wealth I give now to the Muslim community.”
Umar nodded thoughtfully, "There’s no need to give all your wealth to everyone," he suggested. "Give what you wish—perhaps half, as you intended—to those who need it most."
“Very well,” Sa’id replied with a smile, “then let it be for those among the Muslims who need it most.”
With that, Sa’id ibn Sa’na approached the Prophet ﷺ, bearing witness to his faith and embracing Islam wholeheartedly. His entire family, save for one elderly man, also entered Islam. And Sa’id’s dedication did not stop there. He fought valiantly alongside the Prophet ﷺ in many battles and ultimately became a martyr in the Battle of Tabuk.
Sa’id’s story is not just one of his conversion; it is a testament to the Prophet’s ﷺ endless patience, kindness, and leadership. His restraint transformed skeptics into believers, and his mercy and humility spoke louder than any words.
