The home of Umm Haram bint Milhan (RA) was a sanctuary of faith, a place where the Prophet ﷺ often found solace during his visits. It was in this intimate setting, amidst the simplicity of her household, that he shared a vision that would change her life forever.
As they sat together one quiet day, the Prophet ﷺ spoke with an air of certainty, his words rich with divine promise: “The first group from my Ummah to embark on a sea expedition will surely enter Paradise.”
Umm Haram’s eyes lit up with hope, her heart swelling with a yearning that was both personal and profound. “O Messenger of Allah, may I be among them?” she asked, her voice tinged with both eagerness and humility.
The Prophet ﷺ smiled warmly, his gaze resting on her with affection. “Yes, you will be among them,” he assured her, his words carrying the weight of prophecy.
The Fulfillment of a Vision
Years passed, and the promise began to take shape. Under the caliphate of Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan (RA), the Muslims prepared for their first naval expedition. The destination was Cyprus, a land across the sea, and Umm Haram, though older now, was unwavering in her devotion. The chance to fulfill the Prophet’s ﷺ prophecy was an honor she could not forsake.
Her husband, Ubadah ibn al-Samit (RA), was by her side as they embarked on this historic journey. The sea was unforgiving—its waves roared, its winds howled, and the salt-laden air stung their faces. Yet, for Umm Haram, every crash of the waves was a reminder of the promise that had kept her spirit alive for so many years.
Arrival and Destiny
When they finally reached the shores of Cyprus, the air was thick with a sense of accomplishment. For Umm Haram, disembarking onto the island was not just a physical act—it was the culmination of a divine promise. Gratitude poured from her heart as she walked the land, fully aware of the historic significance of this journey.
But destiny had a poignant chapter yet to unfold. During their stay, as Umm Haram prepared to mount her riding animal, she fell, sustaining fatal injuries. Her companions rushed to her aid, their faces etched with concern, but her time had come.
In those final moments, her faith remained unshaken. She embraced her fate with the tranquility of someone who knew she was stepping into the fulfillment of the Prophet’s ﷺ words. Hers was a martyrdom foretold, a death that sealed her place in Paradise.
A Resting Place of Reflection
Her companions buried her on the island, her grave becoming the first on this historic naval expedition. Today, that site is known as Hala Sultan Tekke, a place of reverence and reflection. For centuries, believers have visited her resting place, drawn by the story of her courage and faith.
Umm Haram’s life was a testament to devotion, her death a fulfillment of prophecy. She was a woman of unwavering resolve, her journey across the sea reflecting the boundless determination of a heart anchored in faith.
Her story continues to inspire, a reminder that the call to Allah transcends fear, hardship, and even death. Through her sacrifice, she offers an enduring example of the promise of Paradise and the transformative power of steadfast belief.
