Under the blazing sun of Wabr’s vast plains, Uhban bin Aws tended his flock. The sheep wandered in search of sparse greenery, their bleats echoing against the barren hills. For Uhban, a shepherd’s life was simple yet predictable—until the day it wasn’t.
It began with the rustle of dry grass, an ominous crackle that sent the sheep into a frenzy. Uhban turned just in time to see a wolf dart into the flock, its lean frame cutting through the herd with terrifying precision. The predator's jaws locked around the neck of a helpless lamb, and before Uhban could act, it began to retreat with its prize.
“Not today!” Uhban shouted, his voice cutting through the stillness. Grabbing a stick, he dashed after the wolf, his feet pounding the earth. Adrenaline coursed through him as he closed the distance, wielding his stick with desperate force. The wolf growled, releasing the lamb, which scampered back to the safety of the flock. Breathing heavily, Uhban stood victorious, expecting the wolf to slink away.
But it didn’t.
A Conversation Beyond the Ordinary
The wolf turned to face him, its amber eyes glowing with something that was neither rage nor fear. To Uhban’s astonishment, it sat on its haunches, raised its head, and spoke.
“O shepherd,” the wolf said, its voice calm yet filled with reproach, “how dare you snatch away the sustenance Allah has provided for me? Do you not fear Him?”
The stick slipped from Uhban’s hand. He staggered back, staring at the wolf as though it had sprouted wings. “A wolf… speaking? What kind of sorcery is this?” he muttered, his voice trembling.
The wolf tilted its head, unimpressed by Uhban’s disbelief. “You marvel at my words, yet there are far greater wonders that you ignore. Between two rugged terrains, in the land of date palms, resides a Prophet sent by Allah. He speaks of the past and foretells the future. The gates of Paradise have opened for him, and the dwellers of the heavens watch over him with reverence.”
Uhban’s breath caught in his throat as the wolf’s words sank in. A Prophet? Such a man existed, and he was sitting here in ignorance? The wolf continued; its voice laced with urgency: “Why do you linger here with your sheep when the greatest marvel of all calls you to truth? Go to him. Seek him out and embrace the light he brings.”
A Shepherd’s Hesitation
The shepherd’s heart burned with a newfound yearning, but doubt held him back. He glanced at his flock, the sheep grazing peacefully, oblivious to his inner turmoil.
“If I leave,” he murmured, his voice tinged with hesitation, “who will guard my sheep?”
The wolf’s response was swift and unexpected. “Leave them to me. I will guard them until you return.”
For a moment, Uhban hesitated, torn between his earthly duties and the pull of the divine. But the sincerity in the wolf’s voice, its unshakable calm, stirred something deep within him. Trusting in the miracle before him, he nodded. “I will go.”
The Journey to Medina
The road to Medina was long, the journey arduous, but Uhban pressed on, the wolf’s words resonating in his mind with each step. When he finally reached the city, he inquired about the Prophet ﷺ, and the people guided him to where he sat among his companions.
The moment Uhban laid eyes on the Prophet ﷺ, a profound sense of peace washed over him. This was no ordinary man. His presence radiated a serenity that stilled Uhban’s doubts and filled his heart with certainty.
A Life-Changing Encounter
Uhban approached the Prophet ﷺ, his voice trembling with emotion as he recounted the extraordinary events in Wabr—the sheep’s rescue, the wolf’s reproach, and its vivid description of the Prophet ﷺ. He spoke of the wolf’s promise to guard his flock, his words earnest and filled with awe.
The Prophet ﷺ listened attentively, his gaze warm and reassuring. As the time for Asr prayer approached, he invited Uhban to join the congregation. After the prayer, the Prophet ﷺ turned to him and said, “Share your story with us.”
Uhban retold his tale, his voice steady despite the awe of the moment. The companions listened in silence; their hearts stirred by the shepherd’s testimony.
When he finished, the Prophet ﷺ addressed the gathering, his words filled with calm authority: “He speaks the truth. Before the Last Hour, such marvels will occur. Animals will speak to humans, and even inanimate objects will inform them of events.”
The companions exchanged glances; their faith deepened by this reminder of the unseen power that governs all things.
Returning to Wabr
With the Prophet’s ﷺ affirmation ringing in his ears, Uhban set out for home. Would the wolf have kept its word? The thought lingered as he approached his flock. To his relief and astonishment, every sheep stood unharmed, grazing peacefully under the wolf’s watchful eye.
True to its promise, the wolf had protected the flock. Uhban, overcome with gratitude, approached the creature and offered it a sheep, slaughtering it as a gesture of thanks. The wolf accepted the offering and disappeared into the wilderness, leaving the shepherd to reflect on the miracle he had witnessed.
Uhban’s encounter with the wolf and the Prophet ﷺ marked the beginning of a new chapter. A Jew by birth, he embraced Islam with unshakable conviction. His faith, born from a miraculous conversation, became the foundation of a life dedicated to the service of Allah. He stood alongside the Prophet ﷺ in battles, risking everything for the truth he had found.
Echoes of Prophecy
The wolf’s words pointed to a deeper truth: the miraculous ability of the Prophet ﷺ to recount the past and foretell the future. These were not idle parables but living signs of what was to come.
The Prophet ﷺ once said, “Before the Last Hour, animals and objects will inform their owners of events occurring in their absence.” In today’s world, with technology relaying live updates and devices recording every moment, the prophecy resonates with profound clarity. Imagine a day when your sandals or walking stick could recount your movements—a vision foretold by a man who lived 1,400 years ago.
Uhban’s story reminds us that faith often begins with a spark—a moment of divine intervention that transforms doubt into certainty. His journey from a humble shepherd to a steadfast believer serves as a testament to the timeless power of Allah’s signs and the unparalleled guidance of His Messenger ﷺ.
