“Oh, Messenger of Allah, please pray for the people of Oman.” That was his first request.
The Prophet ﷺ raised his hands and prayed:
“O Allah! Guide them to the straight path. Grant them stability.”
“Please pray more, Messenger,” he pleaded.
The Prophet ﷺ continued:
“Bless them with righteousness, self-sufficiency, and contentment.”
“Messenger of Allah, on the other side of Oman lies a roaring sea. Pray for prosperity in our sustenance and livestock,” he added.
The Prophet ﷺ then prayed:
“O Allah, make their livelihoods abundant through the sea. Bless their provisions.”
“More, Messenger of Allah, please!” he begged again.
The Prophet ﷺ prayed further:
“O Allah, do not let external powers dominate them. Let them remain sovereign and strong.”
Finally, the Prophet ﷺ instructed, “Say ‘Ameen.’ When you do, your prayers are answered.”
The Prophet ﷺ prayed tirelessly for them, ensuring nothing was left unsaid.
A Man from Beyond the Empty Quarter
This man, Mazin Bin Gadouba, may Allah be pleased with him hailed from Oman, a land beyond the world’s driest desert, the Empty Quarter, over 2,000 kilometers away from Medina. How he came to meet the Prophet ﷺ was a story nothing short of extraordinary.
Born and raised in the region of Samail, Mazin grew up in a society marked by unrestrained indulgence. It was a world without rules, where intoxication was rampant, prostitution a curse and women were often objectified. Lavish music, tribal dances, and uninhibited revelry were commonplace.
The community’s intellectual foundation was minimal. They worshipped stones and trees. Some of their practices bordered on absurdity—three stones would be used for cleanliness after relieving oneself, but the most beautiful among them would be set aside for worship. If they found a more attractive stone, they would abandon the previous one and revere the new.
Even though they knew these stones were powerless to benefit or harm, they still imbued them with divine qualities and devoted themselves to them. Among these idols, Mazin’s deity was known as Bajir.
A Divine Call from an Idol
One day, while offering his usual rituals to Bajir, something unimaginable happened. A voice echoed from the idol:
“O Mazin, listen and rejoice.
Goodness has arrived.
Evil has vanished.
A Prophet has emerged from Mudar[1]
with the supreme religion of Allah.
Abandon these carved stones
And save yourself from the blazing fire.”
Mazin was stunned. Soon after, the voice spoke again:
“Come closer and I will tell you more.
A noble Prophet has been sent with the truth.
Believe in him, and you shall find salvation
From the scorching flames of Hell.”
The mysterious voice resonated within Mazin, shaking the very core of his being. Its message lingered, leaving him restless and searching for meaning. Unable to dismiss the event, he found himself pondering its significance when he crossed paths with a traveler from Hijaz. With urgency and curiosity, Mazin questioned the traveler about the man called Muhammad and the message he brought.
The traveler, with evident reverence, spoke of the Muhammad Bin Abdillah Bin Abd al-Muttalib, saying:
“He is a man of profound humility and sincerity, calling people to the worship of Allah alone. He declares:
‘I am not arrogant, nor do I oppress. I am neither boastful nor defiant. I call you to turn to Allah, to abandon the idols you worship. In return, Allah promises the vast expanse of the heavens and the earth as your reward. Flee from the eternal blaze of Hell—a fire that grants no comfort, no escape.’”
The traveler’s words illuminated the voice Mazin had heard. The message of Muhammad was not only clear but resonated deeply with the call of truth Mazin had experienced. The alignment was unmistakable, igniting in him a yearning to meet this extraordinary man whose mission carried echoes of divine guidance.
Mazin realized the voice he heard was echoing the same truth. Without delay, he set off for Medina.
Redemption in the Prophet’s Presence
Upon meeting the Prophet ﷺ, Mazin approached with a mix of awe and humility. The weight of his past life bore heavily on him, and in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ, he felt an overwhelming need to unburden his soul. He spoke candidly of his former ways—the indulgence in worldly pleasures, the arrogance of his ignorance, and the reckless abandon with which he had lived.
With tears in his eyes, Mazin implored:
““O Messenger of Allah,, I was once a man immersed in vice—intoxicated, immoral, and indulgent. My wealth was squandered on such pursuits. I have no children, and my life is hollow. Pray to Allah to purify me, grant me modesty, and bless me with a child who will be a source of joy.”
The Prophet ﷺ responded with heartfelt prayers:
“O Allah, replace his indulgence with the sweetness of Qur’an. Replace his vices with permissible blessings. Purify him from intoxication and immorality. Grant him modesty and bless him with a child.”
Through the Prophet’s prayers, Mazin experienced a transformation he could hardly imagine. He later recounted:
“Every desire for indulgence left my heart. I performed many pilgrimages and memorized half of the Qur’an. I married four women and was blessed with a son, whom I named Hayyan. My land prospered, and the years that followed brought abundance.”
Oman, once plagued by poverty, now flourished. Its seas teemed with diverse fish, including the renowned Omani mackerel. The Prophet’s prayers bore fruit in every aspect of life.
The Prophet’s Unmatched Prayers
The Prophet ﷺ’s supplications were unlike any other, imbued with a profound connection to the Divine that made them uniquely transformative. Another of such instance vividly illustrates this: Abu Huraira (RA), a devoted companion, approached the Prophet ﷺ with a heavy heart, deeply distressed over his mother’s resistance to accepting Islam. He was deeply anguished. His mother, whom he loved dearly, was not only resistant to Islam but would often speak ill of the Prophet ﷺ. Each day, he would invite her to the faith with utmost gentleness, yet her rejection only grew sharper. One day, in a particularly heated moment, she uttered words against the Prophet ﷺ that pierced Abu Huraira's heart. Unable to bear the pain, he left her presence in tears and sought out the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
With his voice trembling and his heart heavy, he said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have been inviting my mother to Islam, but she refuses. Today, she said something about you that broke me. Please, pray to Allah to guide her."
The Prophet ﷺ, moved by Abu Huraira's sincerity, raised his blessed hands and made a heartfelt supplication: "O Allah, guide the mother of Abu Huraira."
Abu Huraira, his heart now brimming with hope, hurried back home. As he approached the door, he heard the sound of water splashing inside. His mother, realizing his presence, called out, "Stay where you are, my son. I am cleansing myself."
Moments later, she opened the door, her face radiant with a newfound serenity. Her first words filled Abu Huraira's soul with indescribable joy:
"I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His Messenger."
In that instant, Abu Huraira's tears of sorrow turned to tears of gratitude. He rushed back to the Prophet ﷺ, his heart unable to contain the joy. "O Messenger of Allah," he exclaimed, "Allah has answered your prayer! My mother has embraced Islam."
The Prophet ﷺ, with a smile of contentment, praised Allah. This moment not only affirmed the Prophet's role as a guide but also underscored the transformative power of sincere supplication—a thread of divine grace that connected the heart of a son, the prayer of a Prophet, and the mercy of the Almighty.
The Prophet ﷺ’s supplications were unlike any other, imbued with a profound connection to the Divine that made them uniquely transformative. Mazin’s Poetic Testimony
Let’s come back to Mazin. Deeply moved by the transformation in his life, he poured his emotions into poetry. His verses were not just an ode to the Prophet ﷺ but a testament to the miraculous change that faith had brought into his being, brimming with gratitude and love:
“To you, O Messenger of Allah, my mount has raced,
Traversing the deserts from Oman to Arj[2].”
“Intercede for me, O best of those to tread upon this earth,
So that my Lord may forgive me, and I may return triumphant.”
“To a people whose faith I have abandoned, I return,
For their ways are not mine, nor their opinions aligned with mine.”
These opening lines reflect the physical journey of Mazin to meet the Prophet ﷺ, a journey that mirrors his spiritual transformation. His heart overflows with gratitude, and his resolve to remain steadfast is evident.
“I was once a man consumed by intoxication and vice,
My youth squandered in heedlessness, my body worn by indulgence.”
“But You, O Messenger, replaced my drunkenness with piety,
And my immorality with a sanctified marriage. You fortified my soul.”
Mazin vividly contrasts his reckless past with the dignity he now enjoys as a Muslim. These lines are a profound reminder of the transformative power of faith and the Prophet’s ﷺ guidance.
“My focus now is jihad and noble intentions,
My fasting, my pilgrimage, all for the sake of Allah.”
In these closing lines, Mazin’s priorities have shifted entirely. The man who once lived for fleeting pleasures now dedicates his life to spiritual striving and submission to Allah.
Mazin’s Enduring Influence in Oman
When Mazin returned to Oman, he initially faced ridicule and scorn. As a respected leader who had once overseen the community’s affairs and resolved their needs, his transformation left many unsettled. Those who had shared in his former ways mocked him with satirical poetry, seeking to diminish his influence. Yet Mazin remained silent, embodying a quiet dignity that transcended their taunts.
Despite the derision, his withdrawal from their midst left a noticeable void. Mazin built a mosque in Milmar and chose to distance himself, focusing on his newfound faith and purpose. His absence was deeply felt, as the community struggled without his leadership and guidance. Over time, they came to realize his indispensable role. Approaching him with humility, they pleaded, “Live your faith as you wish, but do not abandon us. We need your leadership, as we always have.”
This was a turning point. His character, leadership, and unwavering faith inspired many to embrace Islam. His life became a living testament to the Prophet’s ﷺ influence. The blessings of the Prophet’s prayers extended beyond Mazin’s personal life, transforming the community of Oman into a thriving, prosperous society.
The story of Mazin is just one of countless examples that illustrate the transformative power of the Prophet ﷺ. His prayers were never ordinary—they reshaped lives, brought blessings, and turned despair into hope.
In Oman, the abundance of fish and agricultural prosperity became symbols of the answered prayers. The once barren land flourished, and its people found sustenance and spiritual growth. The Omani mackerel, renowned worldwide, is still a testament to the blessings invoked by the Prophet ﷺ.
